Most thermoset resins that are currently used as binders in wood panels are (fossil) oil based, toxic, non-recyclable, and have a large CO2 footprint. Until recently, there were no safe, 100% bio-based and cost-competitive alternatives available. A new group of bio-resins, developed by Plantics, could replace the (mostly formaldehyde based) conventional thermoset resins. These bio-resins are strong, 100 % bio-based, recyclable, cost-efficient and free from formaldehyde and any other toxic components. The EU-funded SWOP project aims to realize and accelerate the market entry of wood panels that use this new group of bio-resins as a binder. The project will help to further develop the European circular economy while also furthering health and environmental goals.
